Blake pulled up to Andy’s house, and Shelby got out of the car waving him off when he offered to carry her overnight bag. She grabbed her small suitcase, closed the back hatch, turned, and NeNe was there.

“I might as well come in and get the cheesecake pan Andy said I could borrow. I want to make two for the holidays.”

“Sure.” Shelby pressed her lips together. The living room lights were on. “Looks like Kris might be here checking Princess and the puppies. I only left the porch light on, and he’s the only other person with a key.”

“So how are you and Kris doing?” NeNe paused. “On Andy’s project. You didn’t say much about it while we were away.”

But she’d said a whole lot about Kris to Libby. “Moving along. No snags so far.” Unless you count the mindboggling kiss we shared.

“You don’t have a Christmas tree,” NeNe observed before she was all the way in the house.

Shelby took off her coat and gloves. “No. Uncle Andy and Diane did the decorating. They must have thought it was too soon to get a tree before they left.”

“You and Kris will have to get one.”

Shelby smiled. Matchmaker NeNe was fishing. Why not give her a nibble? “That might be fun. Weren’t you here to pick up Uncle Andy’s cheesecake pan? You don’t want to keep Blake sitting out in the cold.”

“The car’s heater works fine, and he always keeps a book in the car… but you’re right. We’re both tired and anxious to be home.”

NeNe disappeared into the kitchen and Shelby heard a yelp of surprise. “Hmm.” She’d told her grandmother Kris might be checking on the puppies. Low, almost argumentative voices followed. Shelby could only hope NeNe wasn’t pressing her matchmaking persuasion too hard on Kris.

The voices stopped and her grandmother marched into the living room. “Look what I found.”

Shelby saw the tall dark-haired man following NeNe and froze. But only for a moment. “What are you doing here?”

“Kris asked me the same thing when he let me in,” Tim said.

Her stomach churned “And what did you tell him?” It had to have been good to have let Tim in and let him stay.

“I drove out here to make amends.”

“It’s over, no matter what you say.” She held her ground, as her heart sank to her toes. Kris couldn’t possibly think she’d consider getting back with Tim. Not after the other night.

“I know.” Tim’s expression was contrite. “It was over a while before I was such a jerk and took off on you.”

“Why didn’t you say something?” she demanded.

“Because you’re gorgeous, funny, thoughtful. The kind of woman any man would be proud to have by his side.”

Shelby relented a little. “We did have some good times.”

“But that’s all they were. A step-program I joined after I crashed showed me that I wanted you as a prize, to show off, like all the other awards I won through the years. I didn’t truly love you. And I knew it made Kris jealous.
